First, I think he did the right thing. They weren't asking for money, all they wanted was to "save face". This is an Oriental custom that goes way back. To MOST (but not all) Orientals, saving face is more important that saving your own ass.
Besides, it's not their fault that their supersonic, highly advanced (by Chicom standards) fighter was no match for our old, outdated turbo prop patrol aircraft.
I only hope that we do something more about what they did, than just sending a letter of apology. How about stopping all trade? Maybe a penalty on US companies that do business with China.
